Updated Status

A Tornado Watch is in effect until 5 PM. The main threat for severe weather will be this afternoon, and it will generally be south of the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham area. Putting Walker County outside the watch area now. Oh well!!

    TORNADOES ARE POSSIBLE ON TUESDAY

    Here are some definitions and guidelines to follow to help keep you and your family safe:

    A Tornado Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for tornado development. People located in and around the watch area should keep an eye to the sky and listen to their NOAA weather radio all hazards or tune to local broadcast media for further weather information. T...he watch is intended information. The watch is intended to review safety rules.

    A Tornado Warning is issued when a developing tornado has been detected by National Weather Service doppler radar or a reliable report of a tornado has been reported. A tornado warning is usually issued for portions of one or two counties, for an hour or less. The storm could also produce large hail and destructive straight line winds. If the tornado warning includes your neighborhood or work place, you should seek safe shelter immediately.

    EVENT START LOCATION AND TIME: 32.3633/-88.0894 AT 707 AM
    EVENT END LOCATION AND TIME: 32.3763/-88.0689 AT 709 AM
    DAMAGE PATH LENGTH (IN MILES): 1.50
    DAMAGE WIDTH (IN YARDS): 600 YARDS
    AN EF-2 TORNADO BRIEFLY TOUCHED DOWN IN WHITFIELD AND MOVED
    NORTHEAST…AND LIFTED NORTH OF COUNTY ROAD 42. ALONG ITS SHORT
    PATH…APPROXIMATELY 150 SOFTWOOD TREES WERE SNAPPED…50 HARDWOOD
    TREES WERE UPROOTED…AND FIVE OUTBUILDINGS WERE DAMAGED. SIX HOMES
    AND ONE DOUBLE WIDE MOBILE HOME WERE DAMAGED. ONE HOME WAS DESTROYED
    ALONG COUNTY ROAD 42 WHERE ONE INJURY OCCURRED.

    Tornado Safety

  • 1. Be READY. Watch and listen for weather updates.

  • 2. Outfit your house for the WORST case scenario.

  • 3. If you have time, STOCK UP on supplies, water and food.

  • 4. Unplug small appliances. Turn PROPANE tanks off.

  • 5. Go to the BASEMENT if you have one. Take shelter in an INTERIOR room.

  • 6. Stay AWAY from windows.

  • 7. Get inside the BATHTUB and cover with a mattress or other padding.

  • 8. If you are outside find a DITCH or RAVENE. Lie flat on your face and cover your head and neck with your hands.

  • 9. Do NOT seek refuge in a car.

  • 10. Most Tornados last only minutes so HOLD ON for dear life.

    * TEMPERATURE...MID TO UPPER 20S IN OUTLYING AREAS WHILE LARGER
      URBAN AREAS WILL BE NEAR 32.

    * IMPACTS...PREMATURELY BUDDING PLANTS...SHRUBS...AND TREES WILL
      BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO THESE COLD TEMPERATURES. TENDER PLANTS CAN BE
      KILLED AT THESE TEMPERATURES IF PROTECTIVE MEASURES ARE NOT TAKEN.

    PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
